Long time no see…

It’s been a long time since I posted on my blog. We’ve had a weird summer. Very wet and cool after a super dry spring. Most veg grew reasonably well. For the new season I’ve already planted Radar overwintering onions and Rose de Lautrec garlic. Also onion ‘St. Jan’.

Yesterday’s harvest

Frog

One of our cats found an interesting prey hiding in a box bush. She harrassed it long enough to chase it out of the bush and it turned out to be a frog. She caught it instantly, but quickly had to release it. Obviously it released some nasty chemicals, for the cat was foaming at the mouth within a minute. We put the dazed, but unharmed, frog in our brand new pond, where it seems to have made itsself at home.

Finally

Rain! And more than a few millimeters, though I’ve heard it’ll take a fortnight of steady rain to get up to the normal total amount rainfall for this time of year.

Tomato blossom drop

Several tomato plants are suffering from blossom drop. I”ve checked the symptoms and the causes can be many. I’ll just give them some fertilizer and I’ve cut them partly to allow them to make new stems with flowers. We’ll see. Fortunately not all plants are affected, so I’m still expecting at least some crop.

Broody fish

Fry

Our rosy-red minnows have only been in our brand new pond for a few weeks, but there’s a male busily protecting a clutch of eggs underneath a tiny pond-lily leaf. They may hatch any time now. Exciting.

First earlies

Yesterday I havested the potato plant, which had been growing in a big pot since early spring. I started it indoors, moving it to the greenhouse when it grew on and finally outside after the risk of frost at night had passed. The yeald was over a pound. We ate a lovely potato salad yesterday!
